On June 15th, the City Council will vote on implementing SB 79, a law that would allow 5- to 7-story buildings within a half mile of Palo Alto's Caltrain stations. Right now, City Council plans to allow the least amount of housing possible by reducing SB 79 heights and densities by 50% throughout the area where it applies—unnecessarily limiting homes in transit-oriented neighborhoods and putting the city at potential legal risk.

Palo Alto Forward has a nuanced position on SB 79: We want the council to take advantage of the law to embrace housing in the places where we want it to go—downtown, the University Ave transit center, along Cal Ave and El Camino Real and San Antonio Caltrain. While Palo Alto Forward recognizes Council's intent to exempt historic sites from SB 79 and reduce densities in single-family neighborhoods, we want the City to embrace multi-family homes in the places near transit where it has already been planning for them.

Teacher Housing: A Solution for Educators' Needs - Van Meter Williams Pollack LLP

Who's signing

I support new homes in Palo Alto so that local teachers, seniors looking to downsize, young families, and others can afford to be a part of our community.

To ensure the city continues providing housing for all parts of our community, we ask the City Council to allow 5- to 7-story buildings as would be permitted under SB 79 in our downtown, on University Ave Transit Center, along El Camino Real, along California Avenue and surrounding streets, and in the area around San Antonio Caltrain.
